Alzheimer's Disease and Coconut Oil - Coconut Oil Shows Promise of Reversal
Preface
I have been a huge proponent of using coconut oil in place of canola or vegetable oil for quite some time now. I use it in all my high-heat cooking. It’s completely natural and can be used in place of butter, margarine and liquid oils. A little goes a long way, so it’s also economical.
Pure coconut oil has absolutely no trans fats or polyunsaturated fats and is a great food source to raise your HDL (good) cholesterol levels. There’s much, much more to the benefits of coconut oil than I was aware, as I have recently discovered.
I’ll get back to that in a minute. First, let’s discuss Alzheimer’s Disease.
A Note About Alzheimer's
Alzheimer’s is considered to be much like Diabetes of the brain. The effects of Alzheimer’s begin 10-20 years before symptoms ever show. That’s scary! Insulin resistance prevents the brain from accepting glucose which is a primary fuel for the brain. When the brain doesn’t accept glucose, the cells eventually die. That’s when the effects of Alzheimer’s become apparent: memory loss, diminishing intellect, even physical difficulties.
However, the brain does accept ketones which are first metabolized in the liver then sent to the brain. A good source of ketones is medium chain triglycerides. Guess what is a really good source of medium chain triglycerides? You guessed it – coconut oil! In fact, some say it’s the only viable source.
Story Time
Let me tell you a little story then I want you to watch the video I’ve included in this article. Be sure to watch the video immediately following the first, as it goes into more detail.
Dr. Mary Newport runs a neo-natal unit in a Tampa hospital. Her husband has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. After failing the Alzheimer’s Clock Test (the patient is asked to draw a circle and place the numbers of the clock inside), she was informed her husband had progressed beyond moderate Alzheimer’s. Naturally, she began researching to see what could be done to help her husband. That’s when she discovered the relationship between ketones and the brain. This discovery led her to coconut oil. She then began adding coconut oil to her husband’s foods. Two weeks later, he took the clock test again and showed remarkable improvement. Three weeks later more improvement was evident. Not only could he now draw an intelligible clock, but he improved intellectually, emotionally and physically.
Watch the video here. This is very important!
More Benefits of Coconut Oil
Incorporating coconut oil (it must be pure, not a blend) in the diet appears to not only slow the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease, but actually seems to reverse some of the damage. This brings me back to the amazing benefits of coconut oil.
We have already learned that coconut oil raises HDL cholesterol. Because this ‘good’ fat is metabolized in the liver and sent to the brain, it carries ketones, which are well accepted by the brain, including that of Alzheimer’s patients. Now, here’s the really cool news. By sending ketones to the brain, other brain-related disorders have shown to be positively affected. Look at the list:
- Parkinson’s Disease
- ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Epilepsy
- Dementia
- Schizophrenia
- Autism
Isn’t that amazing? It makes sense. If the brain can’t accept glucose as fuel to keep the cells alive, but can accept ketones, why not feed the brain with fuel it can utilize?
Another benefit of coconut oil is it is a natural antibacterial agent. It kills viruses such as HIV and Herpes and builds your immune system.
What Are You Waiting For?
So, what are you waiting for? Throw out your canola oil and shortenings. Use coconut oil instead. Use it in cooking, baking, even seasoning your foods. Start now. You’ll become healthier and may be able to ward off Alzheimer’s Disease. Incorporate pure coconut oil into the diet of your loved ones who have Alzheimer’s. It can’t hurt and chances are very good you’ll see an improvement in your loved ones’ symptoms.
A Personal Note
So many of my dear friends on HubPages have loved ones who are suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. I wrote this piece in hopes you will try adding coconut oil to their diets. I would love to hear your feedback once you have tried this natural treatment.
I love you all and would like to help bring your loved ones back to you.
Peace,
Bravewarrior
